The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society (WPHS) was originally founded in 1874 to prevent cruelty and protect the lives of children, the elderly and animals within the region. Today, the society operates two shelters in Allegheny County and has focused its mission to prevent cruelty to animals. The WPHS has made a decision to continually operate as an “open-door” shelter, maintaining its commitment to never turn away an unwanted pet or homeless animal. A tremendous amount of unwanted animals come through its doors — more than 12,000 last year alone — and the society has been working diligently to reduce these numbers by spaying and neutering every animal that it takes in as well as offering them the best quality-of-life possible until they can find their forever homes.

In addition to animal sheltering the WPHS offers low-cost clinic services, spay-neuter services, obedience classes, humane education programs, and animal behavior consultations. It also operates a pet cemetery, and conducts humane investigations casework. Its four full-time Humane Police Officers look into numerous allegations and complaints of abuse and cruelty, often issuing citations and confiscating animals from dangerous and abusive situations.

The WPHS also operates outreach education programs for groups of all ages, teaching compassion towards animals, the value of proper training and care of your pet, and the great importance of spaying or neutering your pet to help prevent pet over-population.

It receives no government funding (i.e. tax dollars) and rely on the support of pet lovers within our community.

The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society is proud to announce that it has achieved the “exceptional designation” of a 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator for the past 5 years. Less than a quarter of the organizations that Charity Navigator evaluates have received the highest rating of four stars, and less then 4% of charities ever meet this designation 5 years in a row, indicating that the Western PA Humane Society outperformed the majority of nonprofits in America with respect to fiscal responsibility.
