We are living in a time of uncertainty, leaving many feeling lost and fearful. What if you were a young, legal immigrant, but feared that your family may be deported? What if you were gay and got the courage to come out, but faced physical and verbal harassment every day? I work at a teen-to-teen hotline, Teen Line, that hears from teens like these every day who feel alone, scared and can't take the pressure anymore. Rape, abuse, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide are issues we hear about daily.
Our highly trained, teen volunteers listen with empathy and without judgment to the distressed teens who call/text/email us from all over the world. They sacrifice free time and social lives to help their troubled peers by listening and guiding the caller through their problem, then provide them with ways to cope and support resources. Adult mental health interns supervise and support our listeners, receiving training in an environment like no other.
Our hotline has exploded in the last two months, showing there is significant need. We are trying to keep up with requests from schools and youth organizations for our outreach programs, which provide an opportunity for students to talk about taboo issues to reduce the stigma and encourage them to ask for help. With 1:5 students seriously considering suicide, these programs are essential. Now, more than ever, our teens need you. It's time to get involved.
Please donate ANY AMOUNT, spread the word, and/or create your own profile to support our efforts to reduce the stigma about asking for help and be there when teens need us.
