BENEFITING: MARJORIE WILLIAMS ACADEMY
The students in the sophomore math class at Marjorie Williams Academy were asked, "What problems could you help solve in the community, the nation, or the world?". The idea was to get them thinking about how they might use their unique skills to contribute to society. We expected a lively discussion. We did not anticipate what would result from that discussion.
The list of problems was long, but the problem of homelessness in our mountain communities stood out as a concern for all the students. One student suggested that the class could help serve meals at a local shelter. That suggestion led to many other ideas for how they could make a difference for homeless families. And this project was born.
The students are implementing the project in three parts. First, they are collecting clothing and shoes from the local community, to donate to the Hospitality House, a homeless shelter in nearby Boone, NC. Second, they want to raise money to buy personal items, school supplies, and other items for the families at the shelter. Finally, they will spend a day at the shelter, serving meals and helping with the children's programs.
The class needs your help to raise the money to buy supplies for those at the shelter. Their goal is to raise $1000 through this online campaign. Can you help? Even small donations will add up. Thank you!
Marjorie Williams Academy is a North Carolina charter school located on the campus of the Crossnore School, a non-profit residential foster care home for children in crisis from North Carolina. The school serves students who reside at the Crossnore School as well as students from the local community.
