Marquette and Jolliet - our very own story of exploration - $25 is all it will take to preserve this history. Please help before June 15th.  See more

BENEFITING: FOX-WISCONSIN HERITAGE PARKWAY

HOURS PLEDGED: 248

THE STORY:

We have a chance to receive $50,000 for our project - all we have to do is match it in donations raised. Please help us reach that level by June 15th.

We are about the history of the rivers that run across Wisconsin from Green Bay to Prairie du Chien and all that sprang from their use, their power, and their shores. They made the state, they opened up the western part of the country. We deserve to celebrate this story.

Our exploration:

When Father Marquette and Louis Joliet embarked on a journey to find the Northwest Passage 250 years ago, it would have been impossible for them to have known what would be unleashed by their travels. After weeks of traveling through wilderness, the explorers came upon the Fox-Wisconsin corridor and became the first Europeans to discover a direct route through the middle of the North American continent, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, opening up the west for settlement.

Our Story, before and after:

There are so many amazing stories, so much to feel proud of, so much history that is just waiting to add a richness to our experience of this place. There are so many trails waiting to be built and connected, so much water in need of exploring and enjoying and preserving. There are so many historic sites needing to be connected, to help enhance one another. There is community building to do, to bring us all together to celebrate who we are and where we came from.

The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway is working toward these goals:

  • Inspiring historic interpretation
  • Increasing pride and sense of place for residents
  • Creating water trails for paddlers, land trails for walkers and  bikers
  • Connecting – communities becoming stronger by working together

There is a model to use to accomplish this work. It comes from the National Park Service and is defined as a National Heritage Area. We are following this model, and that brings us to why we need to raise $210,000. We have dozens of dedicated volunteers pouring hours into this project for the sheer joy of what is possible, the vision of what could be. They love the history, or kayaking, or trails, and they are going to make this happen, but we have gotten to the point of needing some professional planning to make sure that all of our end products are of National Park Service quality, are integrated thoughout the whole corridor -- 280 miles -- and are ready to handle the increased visitation that is sure to come once we are:

The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway National Heritage Area.

And now the challenge!!  Every contribution made to the Heritage Parkway between May 1st and June 15th will be ...  matched dollar for dollar ... up to $50,000! That bears repeating ... Matched Dollar for Dollar! Up to $50,000!  (This will bring us very close to our goal)

What are we going to do with that money, you ask?

From Green Bay to Prairie du Chein, working with the National Park Service, several community organizations, and a firm specializing in developing historic sites, we will:

  1. Visit and experience each community personally in order to:

  2. Consult with local citizens and historians to draw out their stories

  3. Analyze all sites and resources with an eye toward increased visitor traffic

  4. Detail how best to tell the stories to create a draw

  5. Determine which projects are most economically feasible & how to manage them

And always -- Preserve our precious history and landscape

How you can help: Contribute just $25 (or $50, or $100) to support this amazing, local opportunity. Truly, it is a once in a lifetime project - be a part of creating a National Heritage Area!
