Providing counseling, inexpensive meals, tutoring and outreach ministry for the community

Background/History

Rev. Toyohiko Kagawa, a peace activist, opened a canteen for the slum dwellers in 1910. His mission was to provide good nutrition and a sense of community for the poor. Now, the 100th year since his ministry, the Kagawa Memorial Hall and the church (UCCJ) decided to re-open the cafe for those in need.

After the 1995 earthquake, the church and the Kagawa Memorial Hall discovered that the community needed help. Since that time, the church has gradually expanded its ministry.

Goals & Objectives

The project is a community Café that is open to all in need, estimated to be around 250 - 300 in the area. The Café sells items from the disabled persons in Tohoku and sometimes food from Tohoku. Objectives: to stay open three days a week, to provide transportation costs for volunteers who are low -income, and to offer more programs to the most vulnerable in society (e.g. the youth who have dropped out of society and school). The Café would like to hire a coordinator for a period of one year. The anticipated timeline is from April 1, 2012 - April 1, 2013. The project presently provides a comfortable space for displaced persons to come to seek assistance. In addition, awareness is raised about Tohoku. (Kobe also had a devastating quake in 1995.) The Cafe will help network within the community and be a place to share Christ's love and peace in the spirit of Kagawa's mission among the poor.

Activities Plan

Secure a permanent coordinator to organize volunteers, and to implement new programs. Continue to counsel those in the community, especially the foreign migrant workers, low -income, depressed, an elderly. Continue to do P.R. in the local community and churches in the District.
