BENEFITING: NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
Here in Chicago, there are very few cessation programs and their funding has been dramatically cut. That’s why Terminate Tobacco Use (terminatetobaccouse.com) is so critical. This program educates Chicago area tobacco users (in any form) about how they can quit, offers them resources and provides access and support options for smokers who cannot afford the program costs. No contribution is too small. All donations go directly to purchase of cessation medications and/or program registration fee.
Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of disease and premature death. It is the #1 public health problem in the United States, yet it is the most ignored. Yes, there has been a general decline in the number of adult smokers in the past three decades, but the fact is 1 in 5 adults in this country still smoke! Another fact is that Big Tobacco targets the most vulnerable populations - the young, low income, less educated, the LGBTQ community - and consequently those groups have the highest percentages of smokers.
By nearly every statistical measure, America’s least fortunate now smoke more and die more from cigarettes than ever before. The majority of smokers want to quit. But, because smokers are too often judged rather than offered help, most smokers are still trying to quit on their own. Each year nearly 2 in 5 cigarette smokers try to quit, but fewer than 4% succeed, a reflection of both the higher level of addiction to nicotine and lack of access to cessation treatment.
Now more than ever, smokers need reliable and relatable information about quitting. Smoking has a greater impact on how long a person lives than whether a person is wealthy or poor. The good news is that it truly is never too late to quit. Ex-smokers have survival rates much closer to those who have never smoked than to those with a tobacco habit.
