My dad's story:
My name is Verlie Council, I am 62 years old.
My symptoms started July 23, 2013. First my left leg went out the next morning my right leg went out, I could only crawl and not very good at that. I went for 1.5 weeks doing a lot of testing and then finally had an MRI and that’s when TM was diagnosed.
The neurologist assigned to me was familiar with TM and was real great at explaining things to me in fact everyone I came into contact with explained things in laymen’s terms not medical terms. They took 14 vials of blood to test for a cause. The neurologist said if they can’t pinpoint it down to a cause they call it ‘Idiopathic TM”, that is what I have.
While in the hospital I was given high doses of steroids and stayed for 6 days. I started walking with a walker, going very slow, and going to physical therapy 2-3 times a week. October I went to my neurologist for a routine visit and he was surprised at how well I was walking, still not good but a lot better than in August. Just before Thanksgiving I graduated to using a cane. I have been doing great on therapy and as of June the therapist said I was doing so well that as long as I do my exercises at home they didn’t feel they could do anymore for me at this time. I do have a wheel chair for when I go somewhere and might be on my feet for a long time or there will be a lot of people.
I went for a second opinion in January 2014 because I wanted to make sure I was doing everything I could and to see if there was anything else I could do. This doctor said there was nothing more that could be done it’s a “wait and see how things go” thing.
My primary doctor has seen a couple of other cases in the past 12 years. The therapists knew very little about it so we all learned together.
I sent for some pamphlets and gave one to everyone that I was in contact with; dentist, doctor, therapist, family, etc to give them a better understanding of TM.
I applied for Social Security Disability in December and was ok’d in May. My employer has treated me very good during this and worked with me, however they will only hold my job for one year so as of June 30, 2014 I no longer have a job.
With summer here the weather has enabled me to get outside and move around more which helps me from becoming too immobile.
