MY STORY

I was diagnosed with the CDH1 gene in April of 2015.  This gave me a greater than 85% chance of having stomach cancer.  The average age that stomach cancer is found is between 22-50. I was 42.  The only option for me to be sure I would be cancer free and to live to see my children grow up, was to have my entire stomach removed - a total gastrectomy.  On July 11th, 2015 I traveled to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC to have this procedure done.  I am happy to report that a year later, I have found my "new normal" and am eating and back to work and doing well!  This gene also gave me a 40-60% chance of developing lobular breast cancer, which three family members were diagnosed with in prior years.  I underwent the double mastectomy only 6 months ago.  After both surgeries, pathology reports showed evidence of early cancer.  So we were beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to beat cancer before it took over!

Stomach Cancer Facts

*  3rd leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide

*  5th most common cancer

*  1 million new cases each year

*  CDH1 patients have a greater than 80% risk of having stomach cancer

*  there is NO EARLY DETECTION so the survival rate of stage IV patients is less than 5%
