I was diagnosed with the CDH1 gene in April of 2015. This gave me a greater than 85% chance of having stomach cancer. The average age that stomach cancer is found is between 22-50. I was 42. The only option for me to be sure I would be cancer free and to live to see my children grow up, was to have my entire stomach removed - a total gastrectomy. On July 11th, 2015 I traveled to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC to have this procedure done. I am happy to report that a year later, I have found my "new normal" and am eating and back to work and doing well! This gene also gave me a 40-60% chance of developing lobular breast cancer, which three family members were diagnosed with in prior years. I underwent the double mastectomy only 6 months ago. After both surgeries, pathology reports showed evidence of early cancer. So we were beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to beat cancer before it took over!
