Maaha! (Good afternoon!) It's so weird to think that my time here is almost done! There are only two more weeks of classes, then revision week, See More

THE STORY:

My name is Tessara Dudley. I'm a senior at Portland State University, heading into my last year of undergraduate study for a bachelor's in Black Studies with a Writing minor. I never thought I'd get the chance to study abroad, but as I prepare to apply to grad school and refine my goals for the future, I've decided to make this dream come true. As a disabled student of color from a working class background, I've struggled in higher education, but the support of brilliant professors, wonderful friends, and a loving family has helped me to persevere. Now, I have the chance to make a long-time dream come true: I've been accepted to the University of Ghana for the fall semester, where I'll have the chance to study the history of Ghana, the Black diaspora, and African resistance to colonization. This coursework will set me up to successfully apply to graduate programs in history, so I can research the African diaspora, get a PhD, and teach at the university level. This fundraiser will allow me to cover the semester's costs beyond what my financial aid will cover. The cost of the program, including housing, tuition, books and supplies, food, and travel is about $11,500; currently, my financial aid for the term is $5,501, leaving me with $5,999 to cover on my own. I plan to seek temp work this summer, but there's no way I'll earn enough to cover all of that — and the housing deposit of $250 is due by June 1st. I'm asking the community to invest in me, so I can reach my goals and come back to reinvest in our community. I am a freelance writer, the founder of a small publishing company, racial and LGBTQ2 justice educator, and a former member of my university's student government. I have experience working in nonprofit development, and providing community support and advocacy for marginalized populations, including: LGBTQ2 people, disabled people, communities of color, and undocumented students. I am passionate and driven, dedicated to social justice and community uplift. I want to teach history because I believe that knowing about our past can help us build stronger communities and that it is vital to know and understand our history to create a better future. Please support me: donate as you can, and share this fundraiser. Your help will allow me to achieve my dreams and continue doing important work to serve our community. Program Details: I'll be traveling through a USAC program, spending the fall semester at the University of Ghana in Accra, from August 12th to December 13th. The program includes a tour of the city, a welcome dinner, and a field trip to Ada Beach. I'll be taking 15 to 18 credits, including a language course and a mandatory political science/sociology course on Ghanaian society and politics. Cost Breakdown:  $5,920 = Program Fee, including tuition;  $1,273 = Housing in the University of Ghana dorms;  ~$750 = Food for the duration of the program;  $163 = Student Visa (includes passport return envelope);  $120 = Non-Citizen ID card; $50 = Residence Permit;  ~$60 = Textbooks and school supplies;  ~$160 = Transportation and in-country travel;  ~$600 = Immunizations and medical preparation, incl. 4 mos of current meds, and ~5 mos of anti-malarial meds;  ~$2,400 = Round-trip airfare
