Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid from India's eastern state of Uttar Pradesh single handedly repulsed a major tank attack by the Pakistan Army in the September 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. Hamid perished in the attach but not before destroying 3 tanks out of the nearly 100 that were poised to capture Amritsar, a city of immense religious significance to Sikhs on account of the Golden Temple. Hamid's valor is a little known fact within India much less outside. What is particularly unique about it is the fact that a Muslim soldier fought and gave his life for a nation that not only gave birth to major religions like Hinduism, Budhism and Jainism but for centuries provided sanctuary to those fleeing religious persecution elsewhere resulting in thriving minority communities of Jews, Parsis (Zorastrians), Christians (catholic and protestant) and Muslims of all sects. Were it not for Hamid's unparalleled bravery the holy city of Amritsar would have fallen with perhaps irreparable damage to the Golden Temple.

This site is being put together by Vijay Dandapani who as an 8 year old living in Amritsar has viivd memories of daily air attacks and the sound of guns from that war. It is dedicated to raising money for Hamid's widow, Rasoolan Bibi who lives in Uttar Pradesh with limited financial means. The target is to raise $5000.00 by June 2014 and hand over the money to her this summer.

Thank you.
