Team-up with Horizons-BFS and raise funds to support a full THREE YEAR robotics program for our summer and after-school program!!
Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School is a summer and afterschool academic enrichment program serving low-income children, grades K-8, living in the Downtown Brooklyn area. Horizons goal is to provide the academic support children need to stay on grade level, along with a comprehensive enrichment curriculum. Committed to the development of the whole child, professional faculty engage Horizons students in experiences that enhance self-esteem, build problem solving and critical thinking skills and encourage a life-long interest in learning.
HORIZONS-BFS ACHIEVEMENT GAP STATS:
- Low-income students enter kindergarten on average 6 months behind higher-income peers in their reading, vocabulary and school readiness.
- Average summer drop-off after 1st grade for African-American students in New York is 22% worse than for African-American students nationally; these African-American New York 1st graders do 36% worse than white 1st graders nationally.
- Students caught in the achievement gap are six times more likely to drop out of high school and have a 51% chance of being unemployed.
HORIZONS SUCCESS: On average, Horizons students tend to improve 2-3 months in reading skills each summer.
“The Horizons program gives children the opportunity to shine in ways they may have not been able to during the school year.” – Amelia Williams, 2nd grade teacher
