Karl Vonder Schmalz

My name is Karl Vonder Schmalz and I have a freshman daughter attending Penn State University. She brought home a tee shirt after summer session in July. On the front it readThat’s Not Who We Are” and on the back “WE ARE …good, caring, compassionate, empathetic, hurting, healing, standing tall, determined…PENN STATE!!!”

It has inspired me to do something for all the Good People at Penn State who had nothing to do with recent circumstances but are hurting and feeling the effects of the actions of one and the inactions of a small group of others. The Good People that I am referring to are the Penn State Family including, but not limited to the students, professors, employees, football team and all other sports programs, band, dance team, cheer leaders, parents, fans, boosters, alumni and all the other supporters associated with Penn State including local businesses.

On November 18, 2012 I am running in the Philadelphia Marathon and dedicating my efforts to honor all the Good People of Penn State. I will proudly wear Penn State clothing while running the marathon. This fund raiser was created to give all the Good People the opportunity to join together and collectively do something to restore the reputation of Penn State and regain the dignity and respect that the University truly deserves. All funds raised will be donated on behalf of all those Good People to the recently established Penn State Hershey Center for the Protection of Children. There could not be a more appropriate organization to support in order to demonstrate the character of the Penn State Family and University.

The healing has begun with the start of the 2012 football season. This fund raiser will help to aid the healing process and play a role in the restoration of the Penn State reputation. The Penn State Family is enormous and with your help and the right exposure we can make it a huge success. The goal is to raise well over $100,000. Please pass on this web site to everyone that you think may be interested.

All donations and this website are managed by Crowdrise, a company dedicated to raising money for charities. A transaction fee is associated with each donation. The maximum fee is 5% on each donation (includes credit card fees) plus $1 on donations under $25 and $2.50 for donations of $25 or more. Transaction fees cover Crowdrise’s costs associated with processing credit card payments, developing, maintaining and hosting the site, plus other value-added services to allow them to provide the best, most innovative fundraising platform in the world. Donations are transferred from Crowdrise directly to the Penn State Hershey Center for the Protection of Children through the Penn State Philanthropic Association. For any questions concerning your donation please contact Patti Reddington, Penn State Direction of Charitable Donations, at 814-863-4855.

The fund raiser will remain open the entire football season until December 1, 2012, one week after the last game against Wisconsin and the date of the Big 10 Championship Game. This date was chosen because Penn State is prohibited from participating in post season activity.

Please join me with my endeavor to dedicate running the Philadelphia Marathon in honor of all the Good People in the Penn State Family. Make a donation today, through this fund raiser, to support the Penn State Hershey Center for the Protection of Children on their behalf.

Recent developments and circumstances do not represent the character of the Penn State Family and University. We know “That’s Not Who We Are”. Lets join together to demonstrate “Who We Are”.
