BENEFITING: THE ELLEN P HERMANSON FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Aug 21, 2016
Voted the best event inthe Hamptons for 4 years in a row, Ellen's Run will take place Sunday, August 21 at Southampton Hospital. The signature event of The Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Ellen's Run attracts more than 1,000 runners who come for a great run, but more importantly come to celebrate the brave, strong, positive women who have battled breast cancer and survived and those who did not.
Ellen's Run is named after Ellen Hermanson, an articulate, courageous, and indomitable warrior in the war against breast cancer. Her personal battle with the disease began in February 1989, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer while still nursing her six-month old daughter. Ellen fought against her disease medically by undergoing surgery and aggressive chemotherapy and by becoming an activist and advocate. In the fall of 1992, Ellen was diagnosed with a reucrrence. Although she underwent chemotherapy, and would remain on chemo for the rest of her life, her conditioned worsened. Yet, this did not keep Ellen from working on projects that included delivering a major speach in Washington, DC entitled, One Patient's Pain at the National Cancer Coaliton Survivorhsip's annual conference. Ellen lost her battle in April 1995 at the age of 42.
The Ellen Hermanson Foundation is unique in its commitment to helping breast cancer patients and their families cope with the changing nature of the physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer. Dedicated to providing state of the art services on the East End of Long Island where the rates of breast cancer diagnosis and mortality are among the highest in New York State, the Foundation keeps 99% of the money raised in the community where it is raised.
The Ellen Hermanson Foundation is a leading funder of breast services on the East End and is committed to ensuring that women have access to quality care in their own community. Before 1996, women on the East End of Long Island did not have access to full-service breast health. Since opening in 2009, The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital has transformed the medical landscape of the East End with Tomosynthesis, the most sophisticated breast imaging available, a board-certified breast surgeon, highly skilled radiologists and a dedicated staff that includes nurses, technicians, a genetic counselor and a patient navigator. Patients do not need to leave the community for excellent care. It is right here on the East End at a facility designated as a “Breast imaging center of excellence” by the American College of Radiology.
Breast cancer does not end when a woman leaves the hospital, and in some ways it is just beginnigng. The Foundation is committed to being present for her through Ellen's Well, a program started in 2000 that provides psychosocial support free of charge. This support might be through support groups facilitated by an oncological social worker, small one-time grants to help in ways that are needed, transportation to and from treatment, yoga, nutritional counseling and a host of other healing modalities.
We have accomplished much, but there is so much more to do. Breast cancer is not going away and neither is The Ellen Hermanson Foundation. To provide services free of charge and work with Southampton Hospital to insure that the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center remains technologically superior costs money.
Thank you for your consideration. With your generous gift, together, we will change lives and, save lives.
