BENEFITING: ACADEMY PROJECT
THE ACADEMY PROJECT--WORKING TO CHANGE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES FOR FOSTER YOUTH IN LOS ANGELES THROUGH COMMUNITY, EMPOWERMENT AND EDUCATION
Camp Xavier was a huge success due in no small part to you, our very generous supporters. Camp was more transformational than we expected. When our kids came off the bus at the end of the week, they were so excited to share all of their adventures and all of the cool things they learned with their caregivers. BIg smiles and lots of yarn necklaces for all!
Now it's time to move on to Phase 2, The Co-Op, an after school program for both our Camp Xavier youth, and some new members as well. At this moment, The Co-Op meets for special trips and events. As we continue to work with our partners and supporters, The Co-Op will become a daily afterschool program, designed to holistically support middle school foster youth, providing a safe place to go and a community to belong to.
We are working toward getting The Co-Op fully operational as quickly as possible. Your donations will help us provide:
A guaranteed spot: While members might not have control over their home or school placements, they can be sure they will always have a place at The Academy Project, from 7th grade through 12th grade and beyond. Once a student is a member of The Academy, they will always have a place in the Academy family.
Consistent relationships: The Co-Op offers students the opportunity to build long-term relationships with a consistent group of adults, who will be there for them from 7th grade through to 12th grade and beyond.
Remediation and tutoring: A focus on remediation during the middle school years
One-to-one therapeutic relationship: Students will be paired with a therapist from our partner organisation, A Home Within.
Peers in a similar situation: The Academy Project offers members the chance to be themselves, safe away from the fear of being 'found out' or seen as different.
Exposure to an array of activities: Co-Op members are unlikely to have had exposure to a range of extracurricular activities. The Co-Op will change that for members, by exposing them to a wide variety of activities and knowledge
A Community, A 'Family': Above all else, The Academy Project will offer members a community, a home; a place where they know they are safe, have consistent support, and are always welcome.
Unlike many programs, our target audience are those foster youth currently most at risk of not completing their high school diploma (as opposed to those demonstrating the most potential). We believe through community, empowerment and education, we can help set these children onto a path for success.
Here in Los Angeles:
75% of foster youth are working below grade level
The average number of schools a foster youth attends while in foster care is 7
Only 58% of foster youth graduate high school (compared to 84% for the general population)
50% of children in foster care end up homeless, institutionalized or incarcerated upon ageing out of the system
Only 4% receive any higher education.
Here at The Academy Project, we believe it doesn’t have to be this way. We believe these dismal outcomes can be changed through community, empowerment and education. We are busy building an alternative educational engagement model that will provide those currently most at risk of not securing a high school diploma, with the support, services and encouragement they need to forge their own success story. It has three parts:
CAMP XAVIER, Our Summer Program July 2017
THE CO-OP, Our After-School Program, launching August 2017
An in-school solution, working towards pilot in 2019.
And there’s an opportunity for you to be part of the story!
