Imagination in place

The Common Acre connects contemporary culture and ecology with innovative, inclusive, and intersectional programming to spark creative solutions for the future of the planet.

The Common Acre envisions a world in which humans live in permanent balance with the natural world. Our mission: to balance the relationship between dominant human culture and natural ecology. Our critical path invovles field work, arts and culture, and community organizing, with a necessary embrase of racial equity and social justice.

Our first five-year focus is on pollinators and restoration of previously dead public spaces through land conservation efforts: without healthy habitats and diversity of species, our very food system is at risk. In addition to science-based interventions, we have been able to use the arts as a way of captivating public interest and motivating towards action. We have:

  • Successfully launched Flight Path; an innovative restoration project on 20 acres of land at Sea-Tac Airport reintroducing native plant species to the area, while creating habitat for honey bees and wild bees.
  • Piloted The Greenline, a large scale pollinator conservation project along City Light’s Creston-Duwamish transmission corridor partnering with Alleycat Acres to create edible native plant ecosystems serving both pollinators and community members.
  • Partnered with Washington State University to launch the NW Pollinator Initiative (www.nwpollinators.org)
  • Led the effort for the City of Seattle to become the nation’s eighth and largest member of Bee City USA (www.beecityusa.org)
  • Reached over 2 million viewers with our art installations and events at Sea-Tac Airport
  • Curated a Town Hall lecture and performance series that engages the public in conversations with professional artists and scientists working at the intersection of art and ecology
  • Helped King County Parks launch the CHOMP! festival of local food and sustainable living
  • Engaged nearly 50 partner organizations and community leaders with our work

As we look ahead we continue to seek creative solutions to environmental issues with our network of community partners.
