Dear friends and family,
On November 5th I will be running the New York City Marathon in memory of my grandparents, or as I called them as a child, "Pretty-Grandmom and Grandad" whom I have nothing but amazing memories of. My grandparents were two incredible and hard working parents of my mother and her 4 other siblings. Sadly, they lost their battle with cancer and passed away at the young ages of 60 (Grandad) and 63 (Pretty Grandmom). Not only will I be running in this great race for them, but I was also given the wonderful opportunity to raise money in support of the DeGregorio Family Foundation.
My overall goal is to raise $3,000 by November 5th!
Any donation would go a long way and I -- and the DegreGorio family -- would greatly appreciate it.
Here is a little background about this family and foundation -- along with what they are aiming to accomplish…..
Today, stomach and esophageal cancers are treated as orphan diseases despite their prevalence and deadliness. Together, more than 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with an upper GI malignancy annually. These are aggressive cancers with high mortality rates. Despite aggressive treatments like the removal of the stomach or esophagus, chemotherapy and radiation, five year survival rates remain dismal at around 15%. To make matters worse, there are no high profile advocacy groups that garner interest in these diseases in the United States. This has resulted in little funding to support research on these deadly cancers, which has meant minimal progress being made in their prevention or improvement in survival once diagnosed.DeGregorio Family Foundation for Gastric and Esophageal Cancer Research & Education (DFF) seeks to promote and facilitate education and collaborative research on the pathogenesis, early diagnostic, and treatment of Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies.DeGregorio Family Foundation was founded in 2006 after a tenth member of the DeGregorio family succumbed to stomach cancer and was found to have possessed a rare gene that causes the disease and other common cancers. The purpose of DeGregorio Family Foundation is to monetarily support research and education and to encourage collaboration amongst researchers in order to facilitate earlier diagnosis and novel treatment therapies for stomach and esophageal cancer related disorders. DeGregorio Family Foundation seeks to shift the tide and strive towards the goal of containment and treatment of these cancers. Please help by clicking the link to donate to the DeGregorio Family Foundation!
