My name is Abby Samuels and I am a third year medical student at NYIT-COM. Fortunately I have had time to do other things except for study in the past two years! In May of 2016 I completed my first half marathon in Brooklyn. Training with my friends was my favorite way to stay grounded (and in shape!) while handling the constant stress of medical school. Last Novemeber I volunteered at the NYC Marathon at the medical tent just half a mile away from the finish line. I was inspired by the thousands of runners (including a few of my medical school classmates!) that still had a smile on their face as they ran (or walked or practically crawled) towards the finish. I knew at that moment that I wanted to be part of such an awe-inspiring event.
I am thrilled to be partnering with the Fresh Air Fund to run in the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5, 2017. I have a close friend that is closely involved with the organization so I have been able to witness first hand the impact that the Fresh Air Fund has on children every summer. Last summer, close to 4,000 children visited volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Each year, 3,000 children also attend five Fresh Air camps on a 2,000-acre site in Fishkill, New York. Youngsters learn how to swim, go on overnight hiking trips and participate in dance and art classes. Campers say their favorite part about camp is meeting new friends. The Fund also provides year-round camping and educational opportunities including a tutoring and mentoring program that serves an additional 2,000 young people each year. Many Fresh Air children have never run barefoot in the grass, caught fireflies or gone swimming in a lake. By participating in this year’s TCS New York City Marathon, I will help thousands of children enjoy simple summertime pleasures. I hope you will support me and The Fresh Air Fund by making a donation.
