BENEFITING: Wildlife Conservation Network, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 18, 2017
Cause: African elephants are amazing creatures who deserve our help in rebuilding their family lives, which in many cases have been devastated by our species. Donating to this page will support The Fridas in their effort to raise money for Save the Elephants. Please donate before November 18th, when The Fridas will be running their hardest for the world's land giants as part of The Saving the Elephants 10K race!
Background: One of the runners on this team is an elephant researcher, and among her favorite elephants in the study population of Samburu, Kenya is an elephant named Frida. Frida is an orphan whose mother died when she was 6 years old after being shot during a year of heavy poaching. Frida is now 14 years old and has a very floppy left ear. Her best friend is 15-year-old Rothko, whose mother was shot when she was 9 years old. Rothko has a very floppy right ear, but together she and Frida have a set of normal ears!
When Frida's older sister Violet died, she cared for Violet's year-old calf who was left orphaned, allowing him to suckle from her until she no longer could due to bearing a calf of her own. Rothko gave birth around the same time as Frida, and the two little ones are best friends, just like their mothers. Our campaign picture shows Frida and Rothko resting with their two calves in between.
