BENEFITING: Edna Lewis Foundation Inc
EVENT DATE: Nov 05, 2016
In 1999, the James Beard Foundation honored Dr. Edna Lewis with their first ever "Living Legend" award, recognizing the chef's impact in elevating both southern cookery and its roots in African-American kitchens and farms. Seven years later, Edna left the world with that legacy of rich culture and delicious food. The Edna Lewis Foundation and its founder Chef Joe Randall seek to carry on what Edna began:
"To revive, preserve, and celebrate the rich history of African-American cookery by cultivating a deeper understanding of Southern food and culture in America."
In Savannah, GA, the Grey's Mashama Bailey and her business partner Johno Morisano have joined with the Foundation in its mission, and with their efforts, Dr. Lewis's legacy thrives in a modern culinary world. One of these efforts, crucial to organizing and executing events, publications, and scholarships for young chefs, involves fundraising in our community. Bailey, Morisano, and their staff rallied to support the Foundation and look to opportunities beyond the restaurant doors.
On November 5th, 2016, a number of the Grey's team members will run half of the Rock and Roll Marathon, completing 13.1 miles each, in order to draw support for the Edna Lewis Foundation. By running, we hope not only to raise money for the Foundation, but to raise awareness of the contribution Edna Lewis and African-American chefs have on our food, our culture, and our history. If you wish to join us in support, please donate on this page or at http://ednalewisfoundation.org/purchase/.
