Early detection saves lives. We know this. We see proof of it every day.
Yet, how often are we surprised that a friend, neighbor, relative or co-worker died suddenly of a heart attack? What were the signs?
Heart disease kills six times more women each year than ALL of the cancers combined. Studies show that 90% of women already have at least one or more risk factors for heart disease yet, for most, the first clue they have heart disease is when they suffer a heart attack or, worse, they die.
In addition to our awareness and educational programs, our focus is on helping more women and their spouses get screened for heart disease. Through our partnerships with health care providers, we are able to help more people identify their specific risk factors for heart disease and learn ways to prevent or slow down the progression of the disease to prevent early heart attack or death.
In South Carolina, we have almost 1.6 million women between the ages of 20-74. According to the American Heart Association, 90% of women already have one or more risk factors for heart disease. Of these women, over 300,000 are at moderate-to-high risk of the disease. With the rising incidents of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, it's more important than ever that we identify these women and help them make positive changes in their lives. Changes, we hope, they will pass this down to their children and grandchildren thus making a long-term impact in the health of our state.
In 2015, we worked with SC Governor Nikki Haley's office to create and launch the Statewide Screening Day initiative. During Heart Month each year, our Statewide Screening Day partners hold screening events across the state while The Heart2Heart Foundation provides the coordination, publicity and heart health educational bags for each participant. Follow-up and referrals for each participant are made by our SSD Partners.
For 2017, we would like to reach a goal of 2,000 basic heart health screenings throughout February. Our fundraising goal will help us expand our Statewide Screening Day initiative during Heart Month in South and North Carolina. Funds will also help us provide scholarships to give eligible women (at moderate-to-high risk) access to advance heart health screenings, including Coronary Calcium Scoring, throughout the 2017.
Awareness + Education + Action = Change for life!
Help us create that change in the lives of women and their families across our state!
THE MISSION OF THE HEART2HEART FOUNDATION is to educate, support and advocate for women's heart health, thereby affecting not only their lives but also those of their families.
