I am running my 3rd marathon for a cause closest to my heart. Over 5 years ago I got sober. The common thread of an addict's story is life becoming unmanageable. In the throws of my disease and my darkest days I received support from family and friends. My journey has been filled with people that have never left my side and people that I've met on my journey that are new in my life but offer love and support on a daily basis. I am lucky and grateful everyday. My road to recovery has been filled with people giving unmerited gifts that have taught me a new way of living and given me freedom to be my best self.
My first year of sobriety I discovered running as an outlet. I ran my first Boston Marathon that spring and met Chris Herren along the way. I mentioned I had just celebrated a year and through heavy breathing and achey legs Chris shared his experience, strength and hope. The transmission line worked. To know that others get better gets others better.
Today I know that there are so many suffering at the hands of this deadly disease. I know that the only way out is through and I know the only way through is getting help.
Addiction knows no boundaries and affects all walks of life. I know that this illness is fraught with guilt and shame that often leaves people feeling alone and family and friends wanting to help but too embarrassed to speak up.
I am running so that people can get the help they need. I am running so that families can get the support they need. I am running so that we can raise money and awareness for a disease that kills thousands. I am running so people can see that we get better.
The Herren Project and THP RUNS is truly honored to once again participate in the 2017 TCS NYC Marathon. Please join us as we provide assistance in taking the first steps toward recovery, and a life of sobriety, through treatment navigation, educational programs, mentoring resources and support groups. We seek to increase awareness on the signs of addiction and bring hope for a better tomorrow. Step by step, The Herren Project team is truly making a difference, one person, one family, one community at a time!
