THE STORY:

As a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, I understand and appreciate the sacrifice made every day by our first responders. It is my privilege and honor to be a member of Team "Answer the Call" for the 2017 New York City Marathon and to help raise funds for this unbelievable organization.

On September 11, 2001, I knew in my heart what it must have felt like for those thousands of first responders to run into the horror of the World Trade Center. I knew the concern, the worry, even the fright (although nobody can possibly understand the full extent of what those men and women felt that day). But I also knew the pride, honor and courage that led them into those buildings without hesitation. And when so many died that day, a little bit of me died that day too.

So on that day, I vowed to one day show my appreciation for the sacrifices shown not only by the heroes of 9/11 but to the heroic first responders throughout NYC, every day, including many who have made the ultimate sacrifice on days and under circumstances that were no less heroic than 9/11. So here I am, training for the New York City Marathon and running on Team "Answer the Call."

The mission of the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund is to support the families of New York City Police Officers, Firefighters, Port Authority Police, and EMS Personnel who have been killed in the line of duty. When these brave men and women make the ultimate sacrifice to protect our city, it is our civic duty to support the families these heroes have left behind. The Fund's mission is to reassure these families that we will never forget them or the sacrifice made by their loved ones. The Fund currently provides annual financial assistance, host special gatherings, and offer a network of support to approximately 600 families.
