Join us as we donate $1 a day to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, starting today.

Sad Stuff on the Street is a fairly silly blog dedicated to the fairly silly past-time of finding sad things lying on sidewalks. We've posted 1 photo of sad stuff every single day for nearly two years now. This has been a lot of fun for both of us, and we’ve been downright delighted as people from around the globe have kept our inbox full of amusing tokens of superficial tragedy.

But then there are moments of real tragedy, more real than we ever thought possible, and we’re reminded of how trivial a blog of abandoned shoes and toys can be. In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, we—like the rest of America—are fumbling for answers. And as the nation grieves and figures out where to go from here, we think part of the answer lies in improving our country’s mental health support system. While just a silly blog, we want to do something—however small—to support the network of health organizations, institutes, and nonprofits that promote mental wellness and health. We’re convinced that if the people who care about mental health take an active role in supporting it, our country will be a better place. Even if only slightly so.

Starting Monday, December 17 and for the next 365 days, with every post on Sad Stuff on the Street the two of us will donate $1 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. And we’re going to ask every charity, business, foundation, corporation, and rich person we know to donate whatever they can spare as well.

If you’re reading this, that means you too. Don’t worry, we don’t think you’re rich. But we do think you care. So if our posts of sad stuff have ever made you happy, please take the time to donate. And over the next year, when you see a post that lifts your mood, donate again.* We'll be donating a dollar per post all year.

All funds raised will be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness on December 17, 2013.

*The Crowdrise website sets their minimum donation at $10, but hopefully you anticipiate finding at least 10 of our posts moderately amusing over the course of the year.
