BENEFITING: Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi

THE STORY:
Last April our lives changed forever, especially for our little Cia who was 8 at the time. When we heard the news that Cia had Type 1 Diabetes, we were almost completely ignorant of what this meant for her. We now know that it means she will never eat anything again without first thinking about her blood sugar level. It usually means that she will need an injection of insulin to cover the carbs in anything she eats. So far, it means that I have only slept straight through the night a handful of times for fear of her getting too low during the night. It also means that I constantly worry about her blood sugar being too high and causing damage to her eyes, nerves, and other organs.
I don't mean to be dramatic. We are so fortunate!! We have access to the best medicine, technology, and doctors we can ask for. But I have learned that not everyone in this state has that same luxury. There are many people who don't have insurance or whose insurance won't cover the best and newest treatments.
This is where the Diabetes Foundation of MS comes in. They provide life-saving medications to needy Mississippians, they provide educational programs to schools, they host a camp for children with diabetes, and they also send a family with a child who has Type 1 Diabetes to visit newly-diagnosed patients in the hospital and deliver a backpack filled with all the right things. Plus much more!
At a time when we felt so overwhelmed, this sweet family showed up on behalf of the Diabetes Foundation of MS and gave us such reassurance and hope that Cia could do anything she wants to do because this little girl was a living example. They also put us in touch with an amazing group of folks who have been a huge support.
Because of all this, we would like to do this small thing to try and give back to this organization that gives so much.
Thanks!
