The TOSH (TAHOE FUNDRAISING) Project
Organized by: Miriam M
We all love Tahoe. Let's start giving back to our second community.
People venture up into the mountains for a laundry list of reasons. Some join for the wilderness, others for the fitness challenge, others for the friends, and many are there for it all. In the end, we’re all loving our home away home.
Driving up after work on Friday night or calling in sick on Monday morning has become part of the Bay Area lifestyle. You nerd out with friends and strangers about types of snow, how long it will last and who will get to it first. We obsess over snow blogs and weather reports, and do snow dances during dry seasons. When it’s not winter, we spend time reminiscing and recruiting for next season.
But, sometimes it's hard to stop and wonder about what goes on outside of our toasty cabin. Tahoe has become a clash of wealthy and poor. Food, gas and shelter costs are skyrocketing. We miss out seeing a local community living right next door.
Did you know that North and South Lake Tahoe’s average household income ranges from $40,000- $62,000?
We love Tahoe all year round, maybe it’s time to give back. Tahoe is fortunate to have amazing resources that we can support and in turn, support the community that we have come to love. Let’s DIRECTLY connect with our own reasons why we keep hitting the road up to the mountains!
The TOSH Project is an easy way to give back to the Tahoe Community! We're looking for ski house leasers to “OPT-IN” 10% (or more) of their security deposit or $25 per person! It's not a lot, but together, it can make a big difference.
For example: In my ski house, “The 5 Lakes House,” we have 13 amazing members. WHEN we opt-in, we will donate 10% from our $2,800 security deposit which is $280 or $21.50 per person!
Where are OUR donations going this year?
ALL DONATIONS ARE GOING TO BE DIVIDED AND DONATED DIRECTLY TO TAHOE PROGRAMS
There are three likely reasons why we joined a Ski House:
Outdoor hands-on experiences, the environment, and Food.
1. ARC (Adventure Risk Challenge): Outdoor education begins from a young age and can become a platform for life. ARC takes youth into the wilderness and teaches team building, self-awareness, confidence, experiential learning and exploration. From serving 10 participants in their first summer, ARC has grown to serve over 200 low-income and English Learner (EL) high school youth year-round. ARC programming includes month-long summer immersion courses, weekend academic & adventure retreats, and individualized mentoring. Core activities that ARC offers include backpacking, rock climbing, ropes courses, kayaking, rafting, skiing and hiking. http://www.adventureriskchallenge.org/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DorbBGcjAbE
2. Tahoe Food Hub: We know the Bay Area cares about food! Connecting the farm to the table happens up in Tahoe too. The Tahoe Food Hub is working to restore local food distribution by building a regional food system for North Lake Tahoe. They support local family farms, Create Access to Regional, Ecological Food, and increases food security. They keep Tahoe fed, increases access to sustainable grown food, build community and creates inter-commerce between regional. They ALSO created Community Soup Night to bring the mountain community together for an affordable priced sustainable sourced meal. They also work closesly with Project Mana where you can connect about donating end of season leftover food. http://www.tahoefoodhub.org/
3. Keep Tahoe Blue: You probably see their Keep Tahoe Blue, the League to Save Lake Tahoe bumper stickers on roof boxes and cars along 80 and 50. Their mission is dedicated to protecting and restoring the environmental health, sustainability, and scenic beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin. They run programs for engaging and educating the community, encourage riders to use shuttles to reduce cars on the road (a great way to avoid parking at the resorts), and take part of community planning to make sure it takes the environment into consideration. https://keeptahoeblue.org/
