Education that embodies a love of learning, enduring understandings, and global citizenship requires teachers who can build authentic relationships. Let's face it, people only listen to those whom they trust. Patience, toleration, humor, and creativity are the mainstays of this sort of education. Teachers must be trained and supported to understand when to assist and when to encourage independent self-direction. The training wheels must come off eventually, but the timing is different for each person. I have a burning desire to build a world full of collaborative, caring, devoted, educated, intelligent, giving educators who understand and agree with this philosophy. Staff members will always have a voice and will be acknowledged and adequately compensated for their invaluable service. Some of my personal heros are Dr. Martin Luther King, John Lennon, Elenor Roosevelt, and Gene Roddenberry. I want to be surrounded by people who love to communicate, negotiate, and show up to work for the joy of the work - not just to collect a pay check. I know this is a viable reality. It is a win-win scenario. These ideas are far from new, but I don't think they have often been partnered with Manufacturing Technology. My area of expertise is welding technologies, but I want to develop this concept to encompass many other advanced technology occupations. I advocate for hybrid education whenever possible - 50% simulators and 50% laboratory work. I want to offer students a smorgasbord of experiences and let them choose their specialization. Students remain until they "get it"...once a member of the program always a member...but not without accountability and responsibility. Students will learn self-regulation, self-respect, and respect for others. Students will work in a real world employment situation (established within our learning environment) to prepare them for the transition to their full time careers. This is a truly progressive, comprehensive educational program concept. The core of my plan for good is to make sure that humanity remains a constant in education. Everyone is different, but we are all the same on the inside. It is critical that students carry that understanding out into the world. I believe in my heart that change happens one person at a time.
