The Veteran Scholars Project
Organized by: Gabrielle Pullen, MFA
For veterans returning to a civilian life, the question is: how to make that transition smoothly. It’s not an obvious path. It requires a new set of goals. For those considering going to college after being out of school for a long time, The Veteran Scholars Project provides training for passing entrance exams, writing successful college applications, and finding new meaning. Along the way, they learn skills to make the transition easier, to honor their own experience, and to continue to cultivate the kind of resilience and grit that has kept them going throughout their military career…This pilot project has been designed to teach veterans advanced reading and writing for success in college and beyond. This study is designed to test the hypothesis that advanced literacy skills improve decision-making, cognitive thinking and lend themselves to resilient individuals. There is no more relevant gift you can make to a veteran returning from active duty who is now left to navigate the strange territory of the sometimes superficial, often self-indulgent culture of civilian life alone.
