Help support us as we mount a reading of "The Wake" at the Drama League! We are so thrilled to present this play at the Drama League, but we need your help to do it! Any amount is a huge help as we work to cover the cost of rehearsal space, materials and to pay our creative team a stipend for their time. Thank you so much!!
Set in a dive bar in Greenwich Village in 1960, "The Wake" is the story of the O'Laire Brothers, a Brooklyn Irish Folk band struggling to make it big in the burgeoning New York City folk scene. After a family tragedy threatened to rip the band apart, brother Mike and Conor O'Laire are joined by their new bassist, Frankie, and the bar's owner, Wattie, for a night of drinking, story-telling and music. As the hours tick by and old tensions arise, the brothers are forced to come to terms with the painful balance of art, ambition and family.
I started writing this play during my final year of grad school. I was preparing for the real world and thinking a lot about failure - the reasons behind failure, the inevitability of it, the aftermath. I was also thinking a lot about family and how one person can have an indelible impact on a group, even when that person is absent. I thought putting these two ideas together would make for a good story. I'm proud of where the play is thus far and I'm looking forward to this reading as a continuation of that process!
