As the Illinois budget crisis continues to drag on, here at The Women’s Center, Inc. we are looking for ways to ensure our stability moving forward. State Funding General Revenue Funding (GRF), a bill that directly supports Rape Crisis Services, has yet to be signed. At this point it is unlikely The Women’s Center, Inc. will receive all state funds, despite a written contract. If the budget impasse continues The Women's Center, Inc. could lose significant funding and could exhaust all resources available. We are turning to our supporters throughout Southern Illinois and beyond, and are humbly asking for donations to assist us through this. We are hopeful this bill will be passed, but are not naive to the risk to our organization moving forward.
Our Rape Crisis staff are often the first friendly face a survivor encounters following an assault, and the risk of those services not being provided is not something we take lightly. We sincerely appreciate all the support we continue to receive from the community, and are hopeful to receive additional support at this time.
“After I was raped a friend talked me into going to the ER. I was terrified and just wanted to hide and cry. I had been out drinking and I felt like it was my fault, there didn’t seem like any reason to even go to the ER, I didn’t think anyone would care about what happened since I had made the choice to go out that night and drink. Once in the ER everyone was nice, but I felt overwhelmed and confused. What had just happened, what was going on, what was going to happen next? I had so many questions, and I just felt numb and unable to think straight. I couldn’t stop crying, and I felt so stupid. As soon as the staff from The Women’s Center showed up they immediately calmed me. They knew just what to say, I felt like I had a voice again. I was still a complete mess, but I didn’t feel like I had to keep it together, because they were keeping it together for me. They believed me, and they made me feel less guilty about what had happened. They gave me so many answers to questions I couldn’t even think to answer, because my mind was all over the place. They took a huge burden off my shoulders that night. I cannot imagine that ER visit without them there.” -Survivor
All donations, no matter how small, will help to ensure The Women’s Center, Inc. stability moving forward!
