Helping children and their families' cope with the devastating loss of a loved one is the goal of The Alcove Center For Grieving Children and Families. The Alcove provides peer support groups to children ages 3-18 and to their surviving adult family members. For many young people, the overwhelming grief that accompanies the loss of a significant person can affect their lives in many ways. Unresolved grief puts children at high risk and can interfere with school achievement, cause depression, anxiety, behavior problems, leading to substance abuse. The Alcove teaches children coping skills and helps them explore the feelings that accompany a loss with the express purpose of helping youngsters become productive adults.
Attending group at the Alcove is cost free to the families.
The Alcove is the only bereavement support center in Southern New Jersey. That leaves a huge gap in service to countless numbers of children who have lost a loved one. The Alcove recognizes the need and has responded by outreaching to schools where there are large numbers of disadvantaged children who have experienced loss ( many times violent and traumatic) and who are unable to attend group at our facility. Bringing our service to the schools allows us to reach larger numbers of children. Bringing our service to the schools circumvents many of the obstacles that many disadvantaged youth face.
