Hi my name is Kristin Lawrence and I am signed up to run the Detroit Marathon in less than two months. I am 45 years old and am not in Marathon training shape. I am currently carrying about - 20 extra pounds that makes each mile torture to my poor legs. With a full time job and family- there is little extra time left over for training at the end of the day. I live in Florida where it is very hot as hades and with the humidity I will forced to run most miles inside. So why you wonder- with all of that would I subject myself to such misery….. well….. I am running because I can. I am running because those that are suffering from ALS will get to a point where they can’t. I am dedicating this race and each mile that I run to Judy who was diagnosed with ALS in October of last year. Judy is my best friend's mom and is someone that I have loved and admired for the majority of my life. To me she has always been the example of what a great mom is. Judy and her husband Tony were the proof and inspiration that true love really does exist and that marriage is beautiful. I am blessed to know this woman and be loved by her. And that is why I run. We need a cure for ALS now. The Monster that is ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord causing the degeneration of the motor neurons. When the motor neurons die, the ability of hte brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. At present there is no known cure. There are 15 new cases each day in the Unites States and it is estimated that as many as 20,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. The race for a cure has become very personal for me as well and Judy and her family and everyone that knows and loves her. Please donate! I will post every day with updates on my training as well as the progress of the fundraising.
