BENEFITING: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
ORGANIZER: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
Those who know me know that I run. I have completed 18 marathons and have accomplished most of my marathon goals. 2013 has been a busy year! I completed 4 marathons in the first 4 months of the year and am training for my 5th--The New York Marathon on November 3. Last year I qualified for the New York Marathon but it was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.
So this year, I decided to try something new! I am running the New York Marathon as a charity runner for TEAM ALS: Running 4 A Cure. I am running in memory of my father-in-law, Bob Olson. He was diagnosed 5 years ago with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. We watched as this disease slowly progressed and Bob lost the ability to use his hands and arms. He was eventually forced into a wheelchair as he was unable to maintain his balance. It was amazing that Bob still maintained a positive attitude even while completely dependent on others for virtually every aspect of daily living. Bob passed away in May, just weeks after I had been accepted to Team ALS: Running 4 A Cure. There is currently no cure for ALS but my goal is to run to help raise funds so that one day there will be one.
Training in the Houston heat has been difficult. I have just a few more long runs left and I am thankful that a cold front is headed our way!
