BENEFITING: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
ORGANIZER: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
This year, I literally won the lottery. No, I am not a millionaire, but I am one of the lucky few who were selected from a random drawing to participate in the historic New York City Marathon. I would like to use my good fortune in this rare opportunity to raise awareness and contribute toward a worthwhile cause.
My wife's grandmother was the victim of ALS. Her family experienced the hardship and loss of a parent and friend that was taken from them too early in life. No child should be forced to care for a parent through the devastating progression of physical decline caused by this disease. Even through this, the greater New York chapter of the ALS association, in its early days, was able to support the family in a time of great need.
Through my own personal experience as a physical therapist, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals who have suffered from this overwhelming illness. I have seen a slow decline in young and energetic individuals. All of my training tells me to focus on funcitonal gain, strength, and strategies for functional improvement. But never have I felt so helpless as when faced with an individual with ALS, where no known intervention can prevent inevitable loss of independence. I can genuinely say that this is the hardest group of patients that I have ever worked with, and I can only imagine the challenges faced by their families and caregivers.
Please join me in contributing to this cause to help fund community resources, family support, awareness initiatives, and research toward controlling the progression of this disease.
