BENEFITING: Autism Zone
Autism is a very personal condition. It is still on the rise and they still don't know exactly what causes it. This is a personal thing that does affect the families of the children that have it. The divorce rate for autistic families is extremely high and the Autism Zone is more attuned to helping families than working with scientists on finding causes. Right from the beginning that is what we have done. We sponsored the "Autism night out" at the local Air Zone where we managed to pay for the tickets for lots of autistic children and we did get to talk to their families and made some friends I'm sure. These people did seem alone to me and when I offered to pay for the tickets some of them actually started crying including myself. Most of these people had not gotten any help from anyone up to this point because most of the children were preschool. I can only imagine what is in store for them in the future. The reason I can imagine it is because we already went through it. Our son who is 36 years old is one of the first Autistic people of this current huge explosion of Autism. They didn't even have a name for it until he was 11. We've gone through all of the worst of it and the situation has lightened up somewhat but it is a long way from perfect. What we would like to do is be able to pay for most of these family opportunities but I was paying for them out my pocket and I have retired recently and I need some help with that sort of thing. There are lots of other things I would like to do also as far as getting tools and passing them out to people in need of them and running interference and information for people that need it. There is a lot of stuff that can be done. And we really need the help.
