BENEFITING: BATI SCHOOL INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 20, 2012
Dear family, friends and colleagues,
I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’ve never been to Haiti!!! I have wanted to go volunteer in Haiti for years (even before the earthquake) but the timing was never right. The perfect opportunity has finally come around and I am beyond excited for this trip!
I am going to Haiti from September 19th-September 24th with a wonderful organization that was founded by a former colleague at Goldman and his sister-- the B.A.T.I. School. As Haitian Americans, Rubens and his sister realized that short-term aid was not the way forward for Haiti. They decided to be active participants in the helping build a stable Haiti and took it upon themselves to build (from scratch) a school in Saint Michel de Sud (about 80 miles from Port-au-Prince).
The B.A.T.I (Building Ayiti to Inspire) School is an all girl’s school providing quality education with a functioning farm as part of the campus, a self-sufficient environment where crops harvested will be sold to generate income for the school’s continued development.
The B.A.T.I. team believes that “creating opportunities for educational attainment has clear benefits for individuals and the societies in which they live in; a skilled workforce is equipped to make useful contributions to their community and educated individuals are able to provide a wider range of opportunities for their children; breaking the cycle of the sustained poverty”—a statement that I couldn’t agree with more.
Those that know me well know that I love education and volunteering. You would also know that I LOVE my birthday and celebrating (often multiple celebrations, across several weeks) – but for my 27th birthday I want to give up all the craziness and ask you to make a contribution to the B.A.T.I. school.
This trip is exactly 10 days away and I have set a goal for myself of $800. That means that I must fundraise around $90 a day until September 19th to reach my goal!! I hope that you can join me in “giving up” my birthday by making a small contribution (make believe you are getting me a cocktail and donate $10!) to this amazing organization.
Thank you for your time and donation!!
p.s. All donations will go directly to B.A.T.I. as I have already covered my flight and stay.
p.p.s Haiti will mark my 50th country visited!!
