The Big Pink Cook-Off
Organized by: Laura Davis
On December 6, 2012, at the age of only 28, my sense of life’s security and innocence was shattered when I heard the phrase, “Laura, it is cancer.” While other young couples were discussing family planning, my husband and I were suddenly planning my lumpectomy and radiation therapy. Thankfully, I was able to find resources and connections unique to young women diagnosed with breast cancer through the Young Survival Coalition. It was the combined support of family, friends and YSC that helped me survive my fight with breast cancer. As shown through me, breast cancer research & awareness is not only for our mothers & grandmothers but also our daughters and sisters. The statistic of 1 in 8 women does not discriminate against age so it has become my mission to educate young women on the importance of regular breast self-exams while also supporting YSC to improve their research and tools for the cancer fights under the age of 40. I am grateful to all those who supported The Big Pink Cook-Off in 2013 and helped us raise over $14,000 for the Young Survival Coalition. In 2014, it is our goal to raise over $16,000 so that young women fighting breast cancer may feel more empowered and hopeful.
