Have you ever met a child who cannot read? I'm not talking about a 1st grader, a child just learning his abc's. We have worked with middle and high school students who struggle to read basic words such as "peace" and "water". In some neighborhoods, as President Obama quipped, it can be easier to get a gun than it is to get a book.
That is why we began the Black Male Reading Academy. The education system in America and their communities have failed Black children for too long, especially Black boys. We have created an environment where young boys can learn to read in an environment that supports them and caters to their unique needs as young Black boys.
Parents and students alike love and need this program. One father says, "This program really cares about our black youth [and] teaches students to want to learn and be a role model for other students to follow. My only improvement would be additional funding to Black Star Project. This is not really an improvement, but a great concern as a parent."
With your help, we can continue to bring high quality reading instruction to these young boys. We can hire more tutors to provide individualized one-on-one instruction. We can purchase more books and reading materials that will capture their minds and inspire them to learn. We can expand beyond our office and reach more students who need this help.
Only you can make this happen. With only 10% of Black boys in America reading at a proficient level, we need your help before another generation of Black boys slips through the cracks. The Black Star Project has helped take an 18-year old young man from a 1st grade reading level to a 5th grade reading level in less than a year. Donate now and help make this kind of progress a reality for struggling young people across Chicago.
