BENEFITING: BORGEN PROJECT
The Borgen Project is a grassroots organization, akin to a lobbying firm. However, instead of lobbying for niche markets and corporate interests, The Borgen Project utilizes the manpower of ordinary citizens to make a difference for those suffering in poverty throughout the world. This method is twofold. The first is simple: send Mr. Borgen, the creator of the Project to Washington to discuss foreign aid initiatives. The second is even simpler, but harder to carry out- the encouraging citizens to get in contact with their Congressional and Presidential representatives, urging their support of bills such as the Water for the World Act and the Electrify Africa Act. Bills such as these create growth in poverty-stricken countries, both creating new markets for American goods and discouraging terrorism. In light of recent government expenditures to increase job growth, and with 20% of the nation's budget spent on defense and security, improving the lives of countless poverty-stricken individuals could be viewed as icing on the cake if more government funds were properly invested in foreign aid.
