BENEFITING: Read Ahead
ORGANIZER: Read Ahead
EVENT DATE: Mar 03, 2016
I have been part of the Read Ahead program for the past five years and have loved having the opportunity to read and mentor students in NYC. I started with Eddie, a 2nd grader who couldn't even name all of his sisters and loved non-fiction books (I learned a lot about caterpillars, astronomy, and snowflakes). For the past three years I have been paired with Sofia, a third grader who loves reading because it is "superlicious and fabulicious" (sung with dance moves and all) and has a deep appreciation for mustaches.
For over three years, I have participated in the Read Ahead Junior Board helping to plan and organize events such as this Bowling event. I am now in my second year as Co-Chair of the Junior Board because the organization means a great deal to me.
I hope you'll consider giving a few dollars (or more...there is no limit!) to support my team and this fantastic nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible and will go towards helping promote children's literacy across the New York City metropolitan area.
About Read Ahead:
Read Ahead is devoted to promoting children's literacy in the New York metropolitan area, through their signature Reading Mentors program.
Read Ahead matches corporate and community volunteers with struggling readers in nearby elementary schools and faciltates lunchtime mentoring sessions every week during the school year. Their programs are provided free of cost to the students and schools who benefit enormously from them. By taking part in the program, students who struggle with reading are able to increase their proficiency and improve their self-confidence, motivating them to read more for pleasure in school and at home. Read Ahead intervenes at a pivotal point in students' early education, helping improve their odds for literate and successful lives.
