The Calendar Project

Our aim at Beetle & Flor is to give people in disadvantaged communities, an opportunity to earn a fair income in a sustainable, creative way. Our projects vary, from commissioning artisans to craft our own designed products, to providing low-cost or free design assistance to established artisan collations, or simply connecting artisans with companies who might hire them-at fair wages-for their unique skills.

Each year we travel to seek out new partnerships and projects, all funded by proceeds of the products we make. This year however, we are asking for a little help for a new project connecting two artisan coalitions in northern India, with a local NGO in the outskirts of Albany, NY:

Peter Dubacher founded Bird Paradise in the mid 70’s and has ever since provided shelter and endless care for ‘unreleasable’ and injured birds. We met Peter in the summer of 2010 when we contacted him about our baby pigeon Winston, whom we had found a few months earlier with a broken leg on a busy street in Brooklyn. By the time we found Peter, Winston had undergone three surgeries, including an amputation, and had at that point become too accustomed to humans (and cats), to be reintroduced into the ‘wild’ (the wild of Brooklyn that is). Bird Paradise welcomed him, and during our visit we saw how hard Peter worked for the hundreds of birds he had taken in.

In return for taking little Winston, we offered to help Peter with graphic and misc. design needs. Peter specifically asked for help creating a calendar, something he could sell to visitors to raise funds for the birds. We’d like to help out by not only designing the calendar but by also having it produced.

In March we are heading off to Dharamsala India, where one of our favorite NGO’s, the Tibetan Settlement Office, facilitate two very important localized projects; 1: Environmental clean up of the upper Dharamsala region in the Himalayas (collection and processing of paper and cotton disposables, which they turn into handmade paper) and 2: Training of Tibetan refugees in papermaking (providing both a viable job and skill).

Lobsang “Army’ is our go to guy for silkscreening, and our plan is for B&F to provide illustrations for the calendar, and hand off the production aspect to the Tibetan Settlement Office (aka the Greenshop) and Lobsang. We are hoping to create around 200 pieces, or however the amount of funding allows us.

Create and produce calendars for the Berkshire Bird Paradise, utilizing illustrations provided by us, handmade paper made by the artisans trained by Tibetan Settlement Office, and paying Lobsang so scrreenprint and assemble the final product.

Thanks so much, and please contribute!
