THE Centers For Exceptional Children
The Centers for Exceptional Children (CFEC) is a private, not-for-profit organization that was created in 2010 by the merger of The Special Children’s School, The Children’s Center and The Family Support Network of Greater Forsyth. The CFEC is focused on leveraging its remarkable assets – human capital, developmental and educational expertise, diverse collaborative relationships, financial resources and reputation – to expand its capability to educate, nurture and support children with special needs to reach their highest potential intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. We accomplish our mission through providing developmentally appropriate education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy. In addition, both of our Winston-Salem, NC campuses provide nursing support, family support services, and numerous enrichment activities. The cornerstone of our work is the Infant/Toddler Nurturing Education and Supportive Therapies (NEST) program, which has a unique focus on children 0 -36-months, and incorporates children with special needs, and typically developing children.
The CFEC is impactful – we make a difference in the lives of children with special needs, their families and the larger community. Our programs provide reverse inclusionary programming during the school day, and we offer a streamlined, one-stop shop system for direct programs and referral information. This work enables parents to focus on their own stable employment or educational progress. We also are built on the foundation that the family is the only support system for an individual with a disability across the lifespan, and believe it is critical that this is a positive support system. All of our work maintains a focus on strengthening the family system by addressing the needs of each member of the household.
The CFEC focuses on possibilities, not limitations – we celebrate small successes along the journey. Our staff and partners work with families coming into the NEST to develop unique Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) for their child, and we consistently provide updated and information regarding individual progress. Through additional family support programming, parents are given the opportunity to use their experiences to help others through workshops, seminars and training.
CFEC has a legacy of helping the most vulnerable children in our community. The NEST program incorporates Evidence-Based and Evidence-Informed programming into all activities, and by focusing on early intervention, we promote a child's age-appropriate growth and development and supports families during the critical early years. This work helps families prepare for the next steps of their journey by connecting with resources that will help them to be successful in the future.
Finally, CFEC is a professionally competent and progressive organization, therefore it is a credible authority on therapeutic, educational and social services. We are the only licensed 5-star developmental day center, serving children ages 0 – 36 months in Forsyth County, and we employ a highly educated staff of teachers, therapists, assistants, and medical professionals.
