EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
I run for my son Owen.
I run for his brothers Connor and Liam, his baby sister Reilly Ann, my wife Carla and myself.
I run for all families impacted by the Death of a Child, especially those from SIDS.
My son Owen was born on February 12, 2012. He was our third boy. After much debate, we named him Owen Michael after my great uncle and my wife’s grandfather.
Our second son Liam wanted to name him Jude… St. Jude, the patron saint of desperate and lost causes… We didn’t know how fitting that name might have been.
Owen grew fast. Our older boys are 99th percentile, but by his four-month birthday, Owen was outpacing both. He was strong too, already able to roll-over and sit-up. He was a big healthy baby, or so we thought.
On the eve of his five month birthday, we put Owen to sleep in his crib as we had 151 times before, but he was never to wake-up again. Owen passed away on the morning of July 12th, 2012.
About 2,500 children in the United States die from SIDS each year. Some die rocking in their parents’ arms. We avoided all the associated risk factors but it didn't matter.
I run to remember. Owen accompanied me on my long runs when the older boys had outgrown the stroller. On his six month birthday, I ran the 10 mile roundtrip to his grave and he was with me the whole way. He will always be with me.
On Sunday November 3rd, 2013 I am running the New York City Marathon in memory of my dear son Owen and in support of the CJ Foundation for SIDS. If you are able and willing, your support would be greatly appreciated.
The CJ Foundation for SIDS, Inc.
The CJ Foundation has been hard at work putting a special team of dedicated runners together to race in the 2013 ING NYC Marathon. Each runner is geared up both on and off the track, putting countless training miles away at a blistering pace and collecting an inspiring wealth of valuable funds to go toward SIDS Research.
