BENEFITING: SOUTHERN SECTOR HEALTH INITIATIVE
EVENT DATE: Oct 24, 2015
As a part of my role at Baylor Medical Center, I work at the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute (DHWI) located in South Dallas. The institute was founded over 5 years ago to help increase prevention and care for diabetes. The Fraizer neighborhood (the neighborhood where DHWI is located) has the highest rates of diabetes, heart disease and stroke in the ENTIRE city of Dallas. Yikes! Baylor saw the need and stepped in to provide the tools needed for a healthier lifestyle. We provide visits with doctors, nurses, exercise specialists, dietitians (aka me and two other amazing dietitians) and a variety of classes to help community members get involved in their own health care. They also have a chair exercise class, a dancing class (which is AWESOME, some mornings I really wish I could join in. They get down!), a craft class and even a bible study! And best of all, it is usually free to those that meet our criteria. But when something is offered for free, you usually need a fundraiser. Am I right?! (shout out Anne) This is where this message comes in (if you are still reading, props to you). We have our annual DHWI Harvest Fun Run and Walk which funds the programs we run here! So if you have a crazy desire to get up early and run you can come join me and Chris! (although we can't promise we won't have bedhead). Or you can come walk, hang out, join in the cause ($$), or pray that our presence in the community would be glorifying to the Lord and a help to his people. All of the above are appreciated!!
Grateful for you all!
