The Cushion & The Classroom: Help Ria with travel costs!
Organized by: Ria Ferich
EVENT DATE Sep 27, 2014
“Cushion & the Classroom” is an invitation to educators in the greater Boston area to meet and discuss the intersection of obstacles in school life and the effects of a personal meditation practice. It is organized by myself and two area educators and will draw on our personal experience and conversations with our peers but will not specifically address Shambhala practices. We will instead focus on more general mindfulness-based approaches.
The day will not follow a typical format and instead will empower participants to take the lead by sharing their experiences and celebrating their successes in challenging environments, in order to tap into their own wisdom as professionals. The schedule will be spacious, allowing for area teachers to have more than fleeting, surface-level discussions on their practice. We will address the speediness present at most schools and how that results in teachers feeling alienated, uninspired instruction and strained relationships with students and families. We will brainstorm how to work with that speed by reflecting on ways we may be contributing to it and finding the space to slow down through meditation. A detailed agenda of the day will be posted soon!
All talks from the day and materials created will be available for free download in October.
I will not be receiving a paycheck until late September from my new school district, for reasons that have yet to reveal themselves and may possibly just be hazing. I am writing with an appeal for donations so that I will be able to attend the Cushion & the Classroom workshop I am running in Boston despite not receiving an income for the next eight weeks. Your help would be defraying my personal travel costs so I do not have to cancel my attendance and can assist with welcoming and providing day-off assistance to participating teachers.
As most of you know, it is uncomfortable for me to ask for help, especially monetary. The fact that I have written this out is a testament to the impact the last few weeks in CO have had on my practice and is a landmark for me as my path unfolds. I hope you consider supporting me facilitate a very special opportunity, at not the most opportune time financially. Thank you in advance for supporting me at this time and throughout my years as an educator.
