The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University seeks to establish The Digital Mass Atrocity Prevention Lab (DMAP Lab). Working at the cutting edge of social sciences and technology, the DMAP Lab will be the first of its kind in the world. The DMAP Lab will critically analyze the impact of social media and new technologies on the prevention of genocide and crimes against humanity. The DMAP Lab will also deepen our understanding of the “power of witness” through the use of technology and innovative digital communications media to detect, document and deter mass atrocities. The Lab’s digital research fellows will provide early warnings of genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and serious war crimes by monitoring and analyzing the new social media of vulnerable countries for incitement to hate that is likely to catalyze violence. Concentrating on the new digital technologies, the Lab will employ crow-sourcing, crisis mapping, specialized mobile phone apps, high-resolution satellite and drone imagery, and other innovative tools to advance the protection of human rights.
