DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AID SOCIETY's Fundraiser:

The DME Launch

DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AID SOCIETY's Photo

BENEFITING: DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AID SOCIETY

EVENT DATE: Mar 21, 2012

THE STORY:

There is an urgent need among low-income and uninsured residents of Los Angeles County for access to durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches etc.  Most private health insurance does not provide durable medical equipment to its subsribers and many are unable to afford the cost of purchasing the equipment.  Three retired health care managers founded The Durable Medical Equipment Aid Society (The DME) in 2010 when they recognized this critical need in their communities: the need for specialized durable medical equipment for low-income people with medical conditions or physical disabilities to use in their homes. The DME founders designed a program  to offer a free loan program of durable medical equipment to individuals living in Los Angeles communities who lack the necessary financial resources or medical insurance to secure medical equipment needed to assist in their recovery from an illness or injury.

We incorporated in July 2010 and were approved as a non-profit organization by the IRS in October 2010.  During much of  2011 or founders prepared and submitted 12 grant proposals to a number of foundations requesting funding for our organization.  Although the proposals were well received, we were advised that we needed a track record before being considered.   We are looking to friends, colleagues and the residents of Los Angeles County to assist us generating initial funding.  We have received donations of durable medical equipment and our storage facility is at capacity.  We need $50,000 to enable us to rent/lease a storage facility which will meet our equipment storage needs as well as provide some space for an administrative office.

As Crowdrise is holding the promotion described in their promotions section and below (scroll down), we are hoping that you will be inspired to assist us in growing our non-profit for the opportunity to win an IPad by donating $26.  The DME is a recognized 501 (c) 3 non-profit and your donation is tax deductible.  Thank you in advance for your generousity.

There is an urgent need among low-income and uninsured residents for access to durable medical equipment.  Three retired health care managers—representing extensive experience with the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services—founded The DME in 2010 when they recognized the critical need in their communities: the need for specialized durable medical equipment for low-income people with medical conditions or physical disabilities to use in their homes. Our founders reviewed a successful durable medical equipment loan program operated since 1923 in Pasadena. Because this organization does not extend its services to areas beyond the San Gabriel Valley, there is a large, unmet need in many other areas of Los Angeles County, including communities that are home to high percentages of low-income, uninsured people. The DME founders designed a program to offer services to all geographic areas of the County, with a focus on areas of high need. The Durable Medical Equipment Aid Society (The DME) has established a program that will fulfill the mission "to offer a free loan program of durable medical equipment to individuals living in Los Angeles communities who lack the necessary financial resources or medical insurance to secure medical equipment needed to assist in their recovery from an illness or injury."
