The Dragonwings Foundation
Organized by: Brittany Pettegrow
The Dragonwings Foundation was created with a basic mission to get books into the hands of children and young adults who would not get them otherwise. Many people miss out on the joy of reading due to financial or social issues. Our goal is to provide a free book to anybody who requests it. There is a form for each applicant to fill out - name, age, grade.. And a story. That is the only price the child pays - a story created from their own imagination and given to us in exchange for a book to help broaden their mental horizons.
As of right now, the Dragonwings Foundation is raising money to get off the ground. We have started a volunteer reading program, gathering students from local high schools who require volunteer hours to graduate and pairing them with residents at long-term nursing facilities. The volunteers read to their assigned resident, sharing a book with those who may have lost the ability to read the words on their own. Though this is a fantastic program, we are eager to push forward with the book-giving aspect of our Foundation as well.
We require a 501(c)(3) categorizing to be considered a non-profit foundation. This will allow us to be tax-exempt and completely legal, which will also enable us to apply for financial assistance such as reduced cost books and other grants. Currently all books that we are able to provide are given through donations, which is absolutely fantastic and we are very grateful! However, donations are not enough at this point to provide the variety that we are looking for. We are sorely lacking in children's books in particular.
The funding that we receive here on CrowdRise will be directed toward the 501(c)(3) first, then we will be purchasing as many books as we can to provide to the children who ask for them. We will also be setting aside a portion for postage, as these books will be sent to either the children's homes or to their schools.
The Dragonwings Foundation has high aspirations and a dedicated plan to grow into much more than what it is today. We have plans involving programs for new mothers, long-term hospital patients, and even college students who are struggling with the ever-growing cost of textbooks. Thank you so much for your help! We couldn't get started without you!
