THE STORY:

This community fund is set up in memory of Dr. Edwin Fonner, Jr., beloved colleague, friend, husband and father who dedicated his life in making a difference by supporting population health.

Update: 8/1/2014

Today is World Lung Cancer Day, and I would like to take this moment to honor the millions of people affected by the disease (the most common cancer worldwide) as well as all of the wonderful medical professionals, spouses, relatives, loved ones, and others fighting the battle alongside their patients.  One of the goals of the Ed Fonner Community Fund is to raise awareness, supporting other charities with these goals in mind.  More updates will be coming soon about donations made and our other planned activities.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the cause—make every day count!!

The Baby Steps (and Strides) That We Have Taken Thus Far, to Support the Ed Fonner, Jr. Community Fund:

Sponsorship contribution to the Nelson E. Hopkins Scholarship Fund; Kansas City, MO; September 20, 2014.  Since 2010, this 5K event seeks to keep alive the memory of a former Alta Vista Charter high school honors student who was senselessly killed while walking home from a local library.  Annually, the Rockhurst University and community help to raise funds through this 5K walk/run event to contribute towards modest college scholarship awards given to current matriculating Alta Vista Charter high school honors graduates.

On August 17, 2014, Eddie and Maribeth Fonner hiked Patricia Peak (11,962 feet) in the Sierra Nevada mountains, near Mammoth Lakes, CA in honor of Dr. Ed.  We placed the following tribute that he wrote for Lt. Col. Fonner (an esteemed Air Force pilot) in the summit box:

Today I Will:  Today, I will stand on my tip toes, look up and over those blocking my way, and be a Dreamer.  As I gaze up at the sky and out at the Universe, I will be open to all possibilities.  Setting my compass, glacing back briefly, I will appreciate my heritage, my challenges, successes and failings.  I will breathe in a great sense of fulfillment for my Providence.  Driven by my furies, I will take risks, I will push outward, and I will reach the top.  With God as my friend and now on my way, quoting Tolstoy, I will ‘want feelings to guide my life, not life to guide my feelings.’ ”

Tom and I have known Ed for over the last 30 years, and met him in New York City as editors of UN World Peace News. He was certainly well read and accomplished an unbelievable amount in his short life—a man of so many talents, interests and energy! How lucky he was he well knew to have his family throughout to support his dreams and ambitions. May his vision carry on! Sue (Nancy) Liggett, NYC 3 years ago
