THE STORY:

At most traditionally run Senior Centers, seniors in need of a daily meal would line up promptly at noon, cafeteria style, fill their trays with institutional food and slowly move back to seats. A congregate meal was available for a requested donation. Soon, it was time to shuffle off for shuffleboard.

Today, the Encore Café is open for breakfast and lunch; volunteer servers wait tables and offer choices, including the "Special of the Day.” We have flexible seating times, and include more freshly prepared meals and soup, salad and sandwiches than ever on our menu. Take-out is another option, if friends, family members, or caregivers want to deliver a meal to eligible persons at home. Participants visit before they exercise, gather in clubs, or meet with counselors one-on-one.

The “Special of the Day” remains an anonymous, voluntary requested contribution of $2.00 for those eligible (age 60 or older, disabled, or the spouse of an eligible person). This is the same cost we requested for the previous traditional congregate meal program. This request is made on behalf of Montgomery County Aging and Adult Services (MCAAS) and all funds collected are sent to MCAAS.

The difference between the Encore Café and a traditional congregate meal program can be summed up by this participant’s comment: “I
don’t feel like a came to get a meal, I feel like I came out for lunch.”

Martha is both a member of Encore Experiences and a caregiver for an eligible woman in Harleysville. When Martha took her charge to the physician, both were pleased to learn that the woman had gained 7 pounds. How? Martha had begun bringing home our “Special of the Day” meal, which the older woman was glad to have over a sandwich or Lean Cuisine. Our
“Special of the Day” was usually enough for two meals for her, but she eventually began finishing it in one meal. We are not a “Meals on Wheels” site, however the new PA State policy allowing take-out, in effect allows us to efficiently provide in-home service via a dedicated volunteer.
